Shine From the Inside Out

Computing

At Hartpury C of E Primary School, we aim to develop children who are motivated and equipped to be courageous advocates for our world, throughout their lives. We seek to develop each child’s understanding, respect, appreciation and responsibility for the world around us, so they can make a difference both now and in the future. The Global Sustainable Development Goals are central to our ethos and our Christian Values underpin all aspects of our community as we strive for the children to develop a broad understanding and enjoyment of the world that enables them to be outward looking, resilient and effective citizens of the future.

Statement of Intent

At Hartpury C of E Primary children are encouraged to embrace technology but also respect it. We educate and prepare our children for our rapidly changing society through the use of technology; with the ever present emphasis on safety. We want our pupils to have a positive experience with all areas of their Computing learning development, experiencing individual responsibility and enjoyment at the same time. Our curriculum is a broad one, that is underpinned by the national curriculum, with areas such as computer science, information technology and digital literacy all reflecting this. We aim to embed our school vision of ‘Shining from the Inside Out’ within our computing curriculum, encouraging progression of computing skills and knowledge in all our thoughts and actions.

We recognise technology can allow pupils to share their learning in creative ways. We also want this shared with parents. Therefore, we encourage staff to try and embed computing across the whole curriculum to make learning creative and accessible. Our intention is that computing supports children’s creativity and cross curricular learning to engage children and enrich their experiences in school. Ongoing development of Dojo, Seesaw and Tapestry are important areas for our school.

Statement of Implementation

Our in house whole computing curriculum is constantly referenced to our school values whenever possible. We teach the national curriculum, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression, ensuring that prior knowledge and skills are always developed and nurtured.

Our computing skills are taught both discretely and embedded across the curriculum, supporting other areas of learning throughout the school. Our curriculum specialises in E-safety, programming, data handling, multimedia and technology in the world. In EYFS, children are encouraged to use technology to support personal learning enquiries and promote expressive skills. In KS1, children are taught to enquire about and use equipment and software confidently and respectfully and to handle information that will support their problem solving and recording skills. In KS2, children at Hartpury begin to develop further their use of computing skills so that they can confidently use and understand communication skills, investigations and programming competently and work to understand how to communicate safely. Hartpury C of E Primary School uses a wide range of programs, such as scratch, and programming equipment, such as beebots, to transfer the knowledge and skills needed for a successful future.

Statement of Impact

Our children enjoy and value the computing curriculum we deliver, but also respect it. Our approach to the computing curriculum results in an engaging, high-quality computing education that is enjoyed by and inspires all our children. When children leave Hartpury, they are confident and safe users of ICT with an understanding of how to stay safe using technology and of how many forms of technology work.
