Shine From the Inside Out

Design and Technology

Statement of Curriculum Intent

At Hartpury C of E School Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject. Using imagination and creativity, pupils can design and make products within a variety of contexts. These may solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Pupils will acquire new subject knowledge and use knowledge and skills from other subjects, such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art to develop projects. Pupils learn how to take risks and become resilient when faced with a challenge. By evaluating past and present products, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of others.

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Statement of Curriculum Implementation

In the Early Years, teaching topics are formulated based on the children’s interests. These topics are designed to give opportunities for children to experience and develop interest in Design Technology. The Kapow EYFS scheme of work, will be followed in the Autumn term 2022. In years 1 to 6, the National Curriculum forms the starting point for our planning and provision where Design Technology and Art are taught alternatively, each mini term, following Kapow Primary Scheme over a two year plan. This scheme provides: complete National Curriculum coverage, progressive scheme of work for Years 1-6, teacher and pupil demonstration videos, 100+ lesson plans easily adaptable to other topics and assessment resources for each unit.

Lessons are taught weekly unless timetabled projects are required to teach a block of lessons consecutively. Where possible units will have links to topics, calendar events such as Christmas or Outdoor Education. There are a variety of enhancements to the curriculum in Year 5/6 children take part in a STEM structures/ electric workshop and compete in a baking competition.

Statement of Curriculum Impact

Design and Technology is a practical and valuable subject. Teaching and learning in design and technology supports the children’s growth in many areas of personal development, especially resilience. The sequence of plan, make and review teaches children how to hypothesise, create, test, refine and take risks. Opportunities are planned for promoting a love of designing, creating and understanding the needs of an ever increasingly technological world.
